Gratitude, Kudos, Appreciation, & Reminders

·       A heartfelt thank you to our wonderful swimming volunteers, particularly the courageous fathers, who stepped up to assist with swimming lessons for our Kindergarten to Grade 2 students this week. Your efforts are deeply appreciated, and we eagerly anticipate the next set of lessons. Additionally, our gratitude extends to every parent who participated in off-site events, ensuring student safety at the YouthLink Interpretive Centre, and Vincent Massey Junior High. Your dedication is both recognized and valued!

·       Kudos to the Alien In-line Skating instructors, for their excellent organizational skills and classroom management. Their innovative use of colored lines and hula hoops for equipment organization kept the students captivated and eager to learn.

·       Lastly, we cannot forget to commend our Fun Lunch volunteers. Their dedication extends beyond event planning; they personally ensure each student receives a delicious meal in their classroom. Today’s pizza was a testament to their commitment and care.

·       Lastly, a reminder that April 18 (tomorrow) is Good Friday and April 21 (Monday) is a System Professional Learning Day. There will be no school for students on those days.

·       Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful and peaceful Easter! May this season bring happiness, renewal, and special moments together. Happy Easter from all of us at Olympic Heights School.

Save the Date for OHS’s Annual Volunteer Appreciation Tea!

Olympic Heights School is delighted to invite all our volunteers to the annual Volunteer Tea on Friday May 23, 2025 at 9:15 AM. We are immensely grateful to everyone who has dedicated their time this year to our school community. Whether you have helped with off-site student activities, contributed to fundraisers like the book fair or casino night, collaborated with the School Council & Parents Association, supported our school library, ensured student safety at the Kiss & Drop zone, or participated in the many other volunteer efforts, your contributions have made a significant impact. Thank you for your invaluable support.   We kindly ask that you RSVP for this event by May 2nd so we can plan appropriately, and we look forward to celebrating all that you've done for OHS!

Social Media Concerns

We wanted to share a gentle reminder about the importance of respectful and age-appropriate use of social media at home. Recently, some students have shared that they are receiving messages through apps like Snapchat outside of school hours on their personal devices. These messages can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or conflicts that carry over into the classroom. As a school, we strive to create a safe and supportive environment where all students feel respected and ready to learn. We kindly encourage families to have ongoing conversations about digital citizenship, including how to communicate respectfully online and the impact words can have—even when shared outside of school. Cellphones and other devices continue to be restricted in all schools throughout the province this year. More information about the CBE Personal Mobile Device Policy, can be found on the CBE website.  Thank you for partnering with us to support our students’ well-being both in and out of the classroom.

 Early Polling and Election Day

Just a reminder that OHS is being used as a polling station for the federal election, for early polling, and on election day, April 28. Elections Canada. There are no classes during advanced polling. While the school will remain open and classes will continue as usual on election day, please rest assured that Elections Canada has strict procedures in place to ensure the safety of our students. These measures include limiting access to designated areas of the building and minimizing any interaction between voters and students throughout the day. As always, the safety and well-being of our students remains our top priority.

Earth Day Celebrations & Spirit Day - Elements of Nature

Reminder that Earth Day is on Tuesday! As a start, classes will be pitching in and cleaning up areas of our school grounds together.  Students are encouraged to bring their own gloves from home. We also encourage all students and staff to participate in our Elements Spirit Day by dressing up to represent the natural elements:

  • Earth: Wear green, brown, or floral patterns. Think flower crowns, leaf-patterned attire, and jewelry made from natural materials like stone or wood.
  • Air: Choose light blue or white, accessorized with feathers, bird motifs, or anything symbolizing the air's flow and grace.
  • Water: Dress in shades of blue and aquamarine, complemented by wave patterns or sea creature designs. Water droplet-shaped accessories will highlight this theme beautifully.
  • Fire: Show the fiery side with red, orange, and yellow, and incorporate designs like suns, flames, or volcanoes.

·       Classes will choose one of these elements to foster a sense of unity and friendly competition. We can't wait to see how each class brings their element to life!

·       Art and Poetry Contest: Express your love for Earth through art and poetry! Students are invited to submit their works inspired by the four elements and the essence of Earth Day. These creations will be displayed around the school to promote environmental awareness. Students, talk to your teacher if you are interested!

·       Recycling and Cleanup Challenge: Join in our school-wide cleanup effort, and let’s make our school and community cleaner and greener. In line with our Air theme, Ms. Radomski's Active School Club is organizing a BikeWalkRoll challenge by choosing eco-friendly ways to come to school and reduce air pollution.

·       We hope these activities will not only celebrate Earth Day but also instill a lifelong commitment to environmental stewardship in our students. Keep an eye out for posters and additional information from our SWAT students as the date approaches. Let’s make Earth Day 2025 impactful, both at school and at home!

ELEV8 Lacrosse Program for Grade 5 & 6

We are excited to share about the opportunity for our Grade 5 and Grade 6 students to participate in the ELEV8 Lacrosse program, coming to Olympic Heights on the week of April 28th. This program is not just an introduction to the sport of lacrosse; it's a deep dive into its indigenous roots and the significant cultural heritage of the sport in Canada and North America. Led by professional coaches and National Lacrosse League players, the Elev8 Classroom Lacrosse program is designed to engage students actively, ensuring a rich, hands-on learning experience. Beyond mastering the basics of lacrosse, our students will embrace core values such as teamwork and integrity, enhancing their physical skills that are fundamental to all sports.

ELEV8 Lacrosse is fully equipped, bringing all necessary gear, including real lacrosse sticks and soft balls, ensuring a safe and comprehensive educational environment. Students will not only learn the mechanics of lacrosse—passing, catching, throwing, and cradling—but also develop crucial physical literacy skills including agility, balance, and coordination. This experience promises not only to enrich their understanding of a historically significant sport but also to foster their physical development through engaging and respectful play.
