Ani to Pisi - Olympic Heights Human Spider Web
Olympic Height Students staff and students participated in creating a Human Spider web outside on our school field earlier this morning. This was a representation of the Blackfoot Indigenous story of Ani to Pisi. The story of Ani to Pisi has so many connections to social and emotional development for children, moreover, it emphasizes the value of community and connection. We were joined by Elder Joy bear Chief, Indigenous drummers, as well as Mount Royal Students who have supported this work in our building. The spider web had a great connection to our Olympic Heights Pillars of Care - caring for ourselves, others, and our place, by learning that we are all connected. The opportunity also had a great connection to our Olympic Heights Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Call to Action for this year, by allowing students and staff to build and nurture learning relationships with Indigenous Edlers and Knowledge Keepers that foster a spirit of reciprocity!
Spring Concert – Next Week
Our spring concert for Grade 1, 2, and 3 students will be held on Thursday April 10th 2025. All students in grades 1, 2 and 3 have been working hard in music classes to prepare performances for you to enjoy. The afternoon assembly will be on Thursday April 10th at 2:15 pm, where students will perform for the older grades and there will be chairs for families to come watch if they wish.
The evening concert will take place during the evening of Thursday April 10th. Students should arrive back at school for 6:00 pm and head to their homeroom for attendance. The show will begin at 6:30 pm. Please mark these dates on your calendar. If your child is in grades 1, 2 or 3, and will not be in attendance on Thursday April 10th, please let Mrs. Tran (lmtran@cbe.ab.ca) know as soon as possible. Thank you!
Friday Book Bonanza continues...
Parents, if you're in the school for Thursday's concert performances, please stop by our Book Bonanza in the plaza. We'll have more retired or donated books on display for you to take and keep for your family.
Sharing Back | School Planning Survey Results
Thank you to everyone who participated in our school planning engagement. We know we make better decisions to support student learning when we build understanding and work together. Due to low participation in our online survey, and in the interest of protecting the anonymity of those who responded, we won’t be sharing the results on our school website. The survey responses we received have been reviewed and will be considered in making decisions about school planning. Below you will find links to results from the discussion at our meeting:
We encourage your participation in future engagement initiatives. Your input is important to us, and we know we make better decisions to support student learning when we build understanding and work together.
Parent Volunteers Needed for Field Trips!
We love providing our students with enriching field trip experiences, but we need your help to keep them going! Without enough parent volunteers, classes may have to cancel some upcoming trips due to supervision requirements. If you have a current police clearance check—or are willing to obtain one—we encourage you to sign up as a volunteer. Your involvement ensures our children can continue learning beyond the classroom in a safe and engaging way. Police checks can be initiated through a fairly simple process.
Please consider lending a hand. Contact your child’s teacher, or the office to sign up or for more details.
Thank you for supporting our students!
Alien Inline Skating for Grades 3 & 4
Get ready as Alien In-Line brings their dynamic inline skating program to our school! Scheduled to take place in the gym from April15th to 17th, our Grade 3 and 4 students will have the unique opportunity to learn a wide range of skating skills. From mastering the basics like standing on skates and simple forward motion to more advanced techniques including various stopping and turning methods, road/pathway etiquette, and even non-aerial jumping, there's something for every skill level. Following instruction, students will engage in games that incorporate these new skills in fun, active ways, possibly culminating in free skating sessions set to music.
Alien In-Line is committed to safety, providing all necessary protective gear (knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, helmet) for our students, and emphasizing its importance throughout the program. We encourage you to discuss the value of protective gear with your child to reinforce its importance both during the program and in any future skating activities. Should you have any questions or wish for more details about the program, please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher.
ELEV8 Lacrosse Program for Grade 5 & 6
We are excited to share about the opportunity for our Grade 5 and Grade 6 students to participate in the ELEV8 Lacrosse program, coming to Olympic Heights on the week of April 28th. This program is not just an introduction to the sport of lacrosse; it's a deep dive into its indigenous roots and the significant cultural heritage of the sport in Canada and North America. Led by professional coaches and National Lacrosse League players, the Elev8 Classroom Lacrosse program is designed to engage students actively, ensuring a rich, hands-on learning experience. Beyond mastering the basics of lacrosse, our students will embrace core values such as teamwork and integrity, enhancing their physical skills that are fundamental to all sports.
ELEV8 Lacrosse is fully equipped, bringing all necessary gear, including real lacrosse sticks and soft balls, ensuring a safe and comprehensive educational environment. Students will not only learn the mechanics of lacrosse—passing, catching, throwing, and cradling—but also develop crucial physical literacy skills including agility, balance, and coordination. This experience promises not only to enrich their understanding of a historically significant sport but also to foster their physical development through engaging and respectful play.
Kindergarten – Grade 2 Swimming Reminder
We're excited to remind you that our students in Kindergarten through Grade 2 will be participating in swimming lessons at the Killarney Aquatic & Recreation Centre at various times over the next two weeks. Please ensure your child comes prepared with all the necessary swimming gear, particularly a swimsuit and a towel. Should you have any questions or need further information, don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher directly. Huge thanks to our parent volunteers for providing their time to make these events possible. We're looking forward to a fun and educational experience for our students!

Grade 6 Provincial Achievement Test Update
Alberta Education has announced that Grade 6 PATs in English Language Arts and Literature, social studies and mathematics will be administered in May and June 2024.
There is no PAT Exam for Grade 6 science. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you know your child will be absent on either of these dates.
Alberta Education will be using a digital platform called Vretta, to enhance provincial student assessments. This digital platform means that students will write provincial achievement tests using a computer, rather than pencil and paper. It will also streamline the process schools use to administer provincial assessments. For further information, please see https://www.alberta.ca/provincial-achievement-tests.
