OHS at the CYSF!

The Science Fair Club, made up of dedicated Grade 5 and 6 students, has been hard at work over the past few months, giving up their own time to develop and refine their projects. Following the OHS Science Fair in February, the top five projects earned the opportunity to advance to the Calgary Youth Science Fair, held this past Friday and Saturday at the Olympic Oval. We are incredibly proud of all students for their curiosity, creativity, and commitment to scientific inquiry. A sincere thank you goes out to the teachers who volunteered their time as mentors over lunch hours, as well as to the families who supported students throughout the process.

Final projects explored a variety of real-world questions, including:

  • Experimenting with sugar substitutes in baking (bronze medal) — Elliott, Grade 6
  • Investigating whether the colour of food storage containers affects how foods mold (bronze medal) — Jain and Samantha, Grade 5
  • Testing the effectiveness of different toothpastes (gold medal) — Evie and Poppy, Grade 5
  • Comparing the effectiveness of hand dryers and paper towels (gold medal) — Shyla, Grade 6
  • Examining the impacts of common car and road pollutants on plants (gold medal and recipient of the Terry and Sharon Allen Special Merit Award for Elementary) — Will, Grade 6

Congratulations to all!

Earth Week at OHS

Next week, OHS will celebrate Earth Week leading up to Earth Day on April 22. Earth Day is a global event that encourages people to reflect on how we care for the planet and take action in our schools, communities, and around the world to protect the environment for future generations. Our Grade 6 students will share their projects with other classes, helping teach how humans, pets, and wildlife share local ecosystems and how everyday choices can impact the environment. All students will also have the opportunity to take part in a school and community clean-up from Monday to Thursday. Teachers will support students in safe practices while picking up litter as we work together to care for our school grounds and surrounding community spaces.

We look forward to a week of learning, action, and community involvement as we work together to make a positive difference for our environment!

Enviro Club - Eco Code Creations at Olympic Heights

Olympic Heights is excited to share a new initiative from our Enviro Team as part of our work with EcoSchools Canada. One of the team’s tasks was to create an “Eco Code” that reflects our school’s commitment to environmental responsibility, and our students rose to the challenge. Theo and Tate from Room 27 designed an Eco Code in the form of an acrostic poem, while Brianna, Avery, and two other students created a powerful wrap‑around poem. These student‑created pieces highlight thoughtful ideas about caring for our environment and our school community. We are proud of the creativity, collaboration, and leadership shown by our students and look forward to sharing more about these new Eco Codes with our school community soon.

Outstanding Fees Reminder

This is a friendly reminder that some families currently have outstanding fees on their child’s school account. Most school-based fees are related to field trips, which operate on a cost-recovery basis to cover expenses such as transportation and service provider fees. Unpaid fees can significantly impact the programs and resources available at our school, including student technology, art supplies, library materials, and other learning supports. For your convenience, payments can be made online using credit or debit through your MyCBE account. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the main office.
