Olympic Heights School's TRC Commitment for 2024-2025
In recognition of today, National Indigenous Peoples Day, and in alignment with the CBE Education Plan, Olympic Heights School is proud to reaffirm our commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s (TRC) Calls to Action for the 2024-2025 school year. This year, our commitment is inspired by Call to Action 63.3, focusing on learning about and through Indigenous knowledges to build student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect.
Spirit - To Be: We are committed to creating opportunities for students, staff, and families to engage with Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers. This initiative aims to foster a spirit of reciprocity, building and nurturing meaningful learning relationships grounded in authentic experiences and reciprocal learning. By doing so, we ensure that our education about Indigenous histories and contributions is both genuine and impactful.
Heart - To Belong: Our curriculum will weave Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing, and knowing across various subjects. We are committed to designing learning tasks that reflect and respect Indigenous perspectives and knowledge. This holistic approach not only enriches our educational framework but also promotes a deeper understanding and respect for Indigenous cultures among our students.
By focusing on these commitments, Olympic Heights School aims to play a significant role in advancing reconciliation and fostering a more inclusive society. We look forward to involving the entire school community in this important journey towards understanding and respect. Please see the CBE’s Indigenous Education Holistic Lifelong Learning Framework for further information, as it forms the basis for this endeavour.
OHS Olympic Sports and Activity Day
We are thrilled to announce our upcoming OHS Olympic Sports and Activity Day, celebrating the upcoming Summer Olympics in Paris! The day will be packed with fun and excitement. All students will have a common lunchtime, followed by a whole school assembly in the afternoon to build excitement. After the assembly, students will participate in an afternoon of various activities, culminating in the highly anticipated parents vs. teachers tug-of-war! Each grade will have a designated Olympic ring color to wear on the day:
- Grade 1: White
- Grade 2: Blue
- Grade 3: Red
- Grade 4: Green
- Grade 5: Black
- Grade 6: Yellow
For the afternoon, each child will receive a “BINGO” card, with the activity station numbers listed according to the station category. When students go to a station, parent volunteers will mark off the correct number. This will help students keep track of the stations they go to.
Please have your children wear clothing that they can be active in. Wear outdoor running shoes, bring water bottles, and dress for the weather. Because this is an active day, students will want to include a few extra healthy items in their lunch. The event will continue even if it rains, but activities will be modified to occur indoors.
Thank you to the parents and community members who have volunteered their time to support this great event. We look forward to an exciting and active day celebrating the spirit of the Olympics!
Celebrating Our Grade 6 Farewell
We are excited to celebrate our departing sixth-grade students as they come to the end of their time here at Olympic Heights School and prepare to head off to junior high school and new adventures. They will be greatly missed! The Farewell ceremony for Grade 6 students and their families will take place on June 25 at 9:15 AM, with doors opening at 9:00 AM. Students are encouraged to dress for the special celebration but should bring a change of clothes for the afternoon, which will feature activities in the classroom with their peers. A special thank you goes to the Grade 6 parent volunteers who are helping to make this event memorable for our departing students.
Student Safety in the Community
As we approach the summer months, it's important to remind our students about key safety practices to ensure everyone stays safe in our community. With more free time and outdoor activities, children may find themselves in various situations where safety awareness is crucial. Please talk to your children about the importance of staying vigilant and knowing what to do if approached by a stranger. Encourage them to stay in groups, avoid secluded areas, and always inform a trusted adult of their whereabouts. Remind them to trust their instincts – if something feels wrong, it probably is. Additionally, having a plan in place for when they are alone can make a big difference. Simple measures like knowing emergency contact numbers, sticking to well-lit paths, and not sharing personal information with strangers can greatly enhance their safety. Let's work together to ensure our children enjoy a fun and safe summer!
Return Overdue Library Books & Last Chance for Book Bonanza!
As we approach the end of the school year, we would like to remind families that all school library books were due on Monday, June 17. As we prepare for the upcoming school year, our library is undergoing a thorough cataloguing and inventory process. Please ensure that any overdue books are returned immediately. Students who do not return their books may incur charges for the cost of the book, which will be added as a fee to their Power School account. For further details on our policies regarding overdue or damaged books, please visit our Learning Commons / Library webpage.
This is the last chance to select books from the "Book Bonanza"! Books will be on display in the plaza until the end of the day on Wednesday. If you’re in the school, feel free to check out the selection. Any books you choose are yours to keep. Many of our “retired” books have found new homes over the past few months; we thank you for your support of this project!
Accessing Online Report Cards through MyCBE
Families will be able to view online student report cards for kindergarten to Grade 12 from June 26 – July 26, 2024. Report cards for the 2023-24 school year may be viewed, downloaded and/or printed. Parents and Guardians can sign in to MyCBE to view student information, including report cards, comments from your child’s teacher, assignments and grades, and attendance information. For best access to information, log in to the MyCBE portal instead of using the PowerSchool App.
Reminder: Last Day of School and Early Dismissal on June 27
We would like to remind families that June 27 is the last day of school for students, with an early dismissal at 12:23 PM. Busing will follow the early dismissal schedule. There is no lunch supervision on June 27, but please ensure your child still has a snack for the half-day. Please be prepared for this change in regular scheduling, and ensure that students are picked up promptly. Thank you for your awareness and support!
