Movie Night a Great Success!
Despite the snowy weather on Thursday evening, there was a great turnout for movie night! Families were treated to a choice of two movies this time – Trolls Band Together or Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Both movies were well-received, judging by the laughter, cheers, and dancing! Thanks to School Council and Parents Association for organizing the event and funding our movie screening license! Gratitude for all the parents who helped tidy up the gymnasium and plaza, and special thanks to Leslie Hall and Laura Osadetz for coordinating this special event!
Elder Hal Visits OHS
Elder Hal Eagletail from Tsuut’ina Nation visited Olympic Heights, for the first of six sessions, on Tuesday! Students from grades 1-3 got to sit and spend time with Elder Hal, listening to stories about Indigenous ways of knowing, doing, being, and belonging, that tied to specific curricular outcomes. Grade 1 classes’ learning focused on environmental stewardship and sustainability, while grade 2 classes heard stories and histories of the Tsuut’ina people tied to the concept of community, and grade 3 classes discussed the usage of natural materials and respecting our land. Elder Hal will be visiting us again in mid-March and working with Kindergarten and students in grades 4 and 5. As Elder Hal has taught us, “siyisgaas” (thank you) for the knowledge and learning he shared!
Pink Shirt Day & “Be Brave” Hockey Game with the Calgary Hitmen
Wednesday, February 28, was Pink Shirt Day, which aims to raise awareness about bullying prevention. OHS students donned their pink-coloured garb in order to celebrate the movement and build understanding of positive social interactions and bullying prevention. Grade 5 students got a special opportunity to attend the “Be Brave” hockey game at Calgary Saddledome, between the Calgary Hitmen and the Edmonton Oil Kings. With over 14 000 students attending from across the city, it was an amazing event! The Calgary Hitmen took the win, with a score of 5-1. Huge thanks to our School Council and Parents Association for making this special day possible, and gratitude to all the staff and parent volunteers who attended with students.
Havana Cuban Dance Studio Residency
Next week, we will be dancing in Phys Ed classes, thanks to our School Council and Parents Association who have generously funded for our one-week residency with dance studio, Havana Cuban Dance! Led by Marcos Ravelo, the residency will share an authentic cultural experience with students, using a growth mindset approach: skills can be enhanced through dedication and practice. This method of teaching enables students to develop a love for learning and a resilience to embracing challenges, which is a fundamental life skill. Students will be introduced to a variety of Latin dance styles such as Salsa, Merengue, Flamenco, Cha Cha, and Reggaeton. Details on an end-of-residency student performance will be shared next week!
Jump Rope for Heart
Thanks to our amazing Phys. Ed. teacher, Ms. Schoenberger, for organizing Jump Rope for Heart this past Thursday. Students discovered fun ways to get active and practice healthy habits while helping others by raising money to help beat heart disease and stroke. Our goal was to raise $1100 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and we are pleased to announce as of March 1, we have exceeded our goal, raising a total of $1920! Casino Fundraiser Volunteers Needed! Sign up here!
Olympic Heights School would like to remind everyone about a unique fundraising event this spring at the Elbow River Casino! We're calling on our dedicated community to join us as volunteers for this significant occasion. Your participation is crucial, as it offers a tremendous opportunity to support our school. By volunteering just a few hours of your time, your participation can help us receive funding, often about $70 000! These funds are vital for enhancing student learning through resources such as advanced technology, improvements to our green spaces, and support for literacy, math, makerspaces, educational field trips, and inquiry-based learning projects.
Here are the key details you need to know:
- The event is scheduled for the weekend of April 20-21, 2024, at the Elbow River Casino, located at 218 - 18th Ave SE, Calgary.
- We welcome anyone over the age of 18 to volunteer; you don’t need a police clearance, nor do you have to be a parent of an OHS student.
- We're offering both day (11am-7:30pm) and night shifts (7:30pm-3:30am or 11pm-4am), with exact times available upon sign-up.
- No prior experience is required.
- Volunteers will receive training, a meal, and free parking.
- Feel free to sign up with friends or family, or come alone to meet new friends!
Please note, it's imperative that all volunteer positions are filled by the end of March to secure our participation in this event.
