Spring Break Reminder
Just a friendly reminder to our wonderful families: Spring Break is coming up next week, from March 25 through April 1. Classes will resume on Tuesday, April 2. We hope everyone enjoys a restful and rejuvenating break! Looking forward to welcoming back our students and families on April 2. Enjoy your time off!
Huge Turnout for Student-Led Conferences
We are overflowing with gratitude to our school community, our school council and parents’ association, and our wonderful families, for joining us for student-led learning conferences. Despite the inclement weather, the turnout was fantastic and students were proud to show their families the growth they have achieved over the school year so far. As a school staff, we feel incredibly lucky to be part of this wonderful community. We also want to thank School Council, particularly Laura Osadetz and Leslie Hall, for the nourishing dinner that were provided for staff. It’s a long day for teachers and the meal helped carry us through! From all the staff at Olympic Heights School, a hearty and heartfelt thank-you!
Book Fair a Resounding Success
We want to send out special recognition to our amazing book fair volunteers, especially chair and coordinator Jen Ward, for all their strong efforts to make the event a success. It’s always fulfilling to see students getting excited about reading! Ms. Sjogren, the splendid steward of our school library, shared the following message: “Thank you to all our families for your enthusiastic support of our book fair and to our volunteers for making it happen. On Thursday our sales topped $5200, with more coming in today. This means our library will be able to purchase many new titles for our students to read and enjoy. THANK YOU!” Gratitude as well to Calgary Public Library for bringing in the Book Truck on Friday for families, and deep appreciation for parent Shaelyn Woods for organizing the visit!
SCA Community Centre – Our Friendly Neighbours
As a school, we always want to be mindful of those who border or school grounds. We are very fortunate to have excellent neighbours at the SCA Community Centre. The SCA shares many of its resources with the school, allowing access to the community garden, as well as the rinks and courts when requested. To help reciprocate this “good neighbour” approach we would like to remind parents not to use the community centre parking lot for drop off and pick up during peak times. While the community parking lot is convenient, the community association has three separate childcare/preschool programs and seniors programming that take place throughout the day that need guaranteed safe access to the parking lot. Please, help us be a good neighbour and prioritize community over convenience. Thanks!
Grade 4 Initiative to Reduce Lost & Found Items
In anticipation of Earth Day on April 22, students in Ms. Radomski’s grade 4 class have started a campaign to help reduce misplaced items, with the slogan “Label It & Tie It”, encouraging students to label their items and tie clothing items around their waist. According to their research and data collection, sweaters/jackets are the number one most misplaced item and comprise the majority of our lost and found collection. Thanks to parents and families who took time to go through all the misplaced items during student-led conferences – we noticed a definite reduction in items. For those who weren’t able to make it in, or haven’t have a chance to explore its contents, we have a wide range of clothing, outdoor gear, water bottles, and lunch kits. As well, KidzInc will often add items left at before/after-care to the collection. We remind parents to label all items coming to school as it is the easiest way to re-unite them with your child. As we usually do, we will be donating all items, winter or otherwise, as the weather begins to improve. Thanks for your help in reducing unnecessary waste!
Grades 5 and 6 Floor Hockey Intramurals
We're excited to share that our Grade 5 and 6 students have been actively engaging in floor hockey intramurals during lunchtimes over the past two weeks. This fun activity has brought a lot of joy and healthy competition to our students, fostering teamwork and sportsmanship. A heartfelt thank you goes out to Ms. Schoenberger and the Grade 5 and 6 teachers for dedicating their lunch breaks to facilitate this great opportunity. Their commitment has made these enjoyable moments possible, and we are immensely grateful for their support. Our school community continues to shine through these collaborative efforts. Thank you!
Spring Concert Just Around the Corner
If you hadn’t heard, we're excited to announce our upcoming Spring Concert, scheduled for Thursday, April 18th, featuring performances by students in grades 1, 2, and 3. These young musicians have been diligently preparing in their music classes to present a captivating show for the community, with two showings at 2:00 PM and 6:30 PM. While our kindergarteners will have their spotlight in June, this event for Div. I students promises to showcase their hard work and talent, under the guidance of Mrs. Tran. If your child cannot attend, please inform Mrs. Tran at lmtran@cbe.ab.ca as soon as possible. The Spring Concert is a tribute to our students' dedication and our community's support, and we're looking forward to sharing this musical event with you. See you on April 18th!

Our Casino Fundraiser on April 20 & 21, 2024, at the Elbow River Casino is fast approaching, and we need your help! With just 5 volunteer spots left to fill, your involvement could make a world of difference.
Why Volunteer? Volunteering at our casino event is not just about giving your time; it's about creating opportunities for our children. Over the past few years, thanks to events like these, we've been able to:
- Enhance our gym with a new audio/visual system
- Invest in exciting new playground equipment
- Subsidize field trip transportation, making adventures more accessible
- Introduce special programs (artists-in-residence, dance, etc.)
- Equip our classrooms with Chromebooks, iPads, Smart Boards, digital cameras, and robotics
- Expand our library and purchase vital supplies for phys. ed., music, and maker spaces
It's Easy and Fun! No previous experience? No problem! Training is provided at the start of each shift, ensuring everyone is ready and comfortable with their roles. Plus, you'll be joining a fantastic community of parents and members who make these events memorable and enjoyable.
Critical Need: We are on a tight deadline to fill all volunteer positions by the end of March 2024. Failing to meet this requirement means losing our spot for the year, a missed opportunity for funding essential resources and programs for our students.
Perks for Volunteers:
- No experience required
- Free meal and parking
- A great chance to meet other OHS parents and community members
- Contribute to raising up to $70,000 for our children's learning resources
