Halloween Festivities
Yesterday saw many students and staff take the opportunity to dress up in a variety of costumes and outfits for Halloween. Our kindergarten students paraded around the plaza, while our grades one through six students enjoyed a day filled with thematic and regular learning, all while mixing in the sharing of outfits and costumes. Staff teams dressed in groups ranging from “Inside Out” characters and nursery rhyme favourites, to police and convicts, idioms (yes, that’s an m) and even creative “UFLIES.” A special thank you to those parents who are carefully monitoring and rationing student candy consumption!
OHS Staff is Growing!
We are excited to announce some staffing changes happening next week, largely due to our September 30 student enrolment. We have added a part-time intervention teacher to support our at-risk literacy and numeracy students, particularly in grades 1-3. Ms. Scherman, our current PE teacher will be moving into this role as she has a wealth of experience in student support. We have hired Ms. Jennalee Burch as our new PE teacher, who will now offer increased specialist teaching time to our students. Ms. Burch comes with a wealth of PE experience at all levels, including international experience as the athletic director for both high school and elementary programs. Welcome to OHS Ms. Burch! We want to thank Ms. Scherman for getting our PE program and SWAT up and running and ready for Ms. Burch to continue. We are also in the process of hiring an English as an additional language assistant, as well as an additional education assistant to further support student learning. Finally, congratulations to Ms. Crozier who moves from a lunch supervisor role to our lead lunch supervisor. We are excited to add new faces in support of student learning!
Fall Break and Remembrance Day Assembly
This year’s CBE fall break for students begins on Friday Nov. 8 and runs through to Wednesday Nov. 13. Students return to class on Thursday, Nov. 14. Staff will participate in professional development on Friday, Nov. 8. Our school Remembrance Day ceremony will be held on Thursday Nov. 7 at 10:30AM. Parents are welcome for the somber celebration. We hope everyone enjoys a restful and thoughtful fall break.
Fall Back!
It’s time to adjust our clocks once again. Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2:00AM our clocks fall back one hour. Remember to adjust yours so you can be on time (instead of really early) for school on Monday! For those of you who struggle to get to school by 8:40AM, maybe leave it? 😉
Child and Youth Well-Being, Family & Caregiver Fall Series
The Calgary Board of Education invites all parents and guardians to join us in a pre-recorded and live online series focusing on child and youth well-being. These sessions will be hosted in partnership with experts from Alberta Health Services and Recovery Alberta and will explore topics such as Peer Pressure, Healthy Relationships, Mental Health for Highly Sensitive Teens, and navigating Parent-Teen relationships. Please see this brochure for some valuable resources and opportunities.
News from the Learning Commons
Over the upcoming break, we hope our students will enjoy reading the many great books they have checked out from our library. The break also provides an opportunity to try to locate overdue books that might be at home so they can be returned for other students to enjoy when classes resume. Our library assistant will be letting teachers know early next week which children have overdue books and they’ll pass that info onto our students. Please support our students in developing responsible behaviors including returning library books when due.
