Halloween Dance
Once again the school and community enjoyed a fantastic and energetic Halloween Dance at OHS. The turnout was massive, the costumes were incredible, and the children were thrilled. Huge kudos to Krista Leonty and the wonderful parent volunteers who made this such a successful evening and cone again demonstrated massive dedication and commitment to supporting the school community. Thanks to our School Council & OHS Parents Association for providing support for the event!
Halloween Costumes at School (Oct. 31)
On Thursday, October 31st, we're excited to invite all students to participate in Halloween festivities by wearing costumes to school. To ensure a safe and inclusive environment, we kindly request that costumes be comfortable for full participation and free from weapons, masks, face coverings, or violent or gory themes. Remember, your child will be in class all day, so inflatable costumes might be very challenging. Dressing up in a costume is not required if students prefer not to participate. In the spirit of promoting a healthy and equitable celebration, please refrain from sending candy, food, or similar items to school, as we won't be able to distribute or share them with the students. Thank you for your cooperation, and let's make this Halloween a memorable and enjoyable experience for all our students.
Reminder | Snacks at School (Halloween and Birthdays)
We understand that Halloween and/or birthdays might be important milestones in a child’s life and families often want to celebrate a birthday with their child’s classmates. If a family is choosing to send something to school in celebration, we ask that families send a non-food item (example: pencils, erasers, small toys, etc.). Please do not send cupcakes, doughnuts, cookies, lollipops, etc. Due to allergies, inclusivity, and potential classroom distractions, we aim to create a focused and safe learning environment for all. Any type of non-food item would be most appropriate if families are choosing to celebrate a birthday with classmates. With many allergies, it is too difficult to ensure student safety. Thank you for your understanding.
Happy Diwali
OHS would like to recognise that many of our families may be celebrating Diwali (Oct. 31-Nov. 1) in the coming week. We recognise the importance if this celebrated time. For those celebrating, we wish you and your family a safe, prosperous, and wonderful Diwali!
Grade 6 Students “Walk for Wenjack”
Over the past few days students in grade six have been engaged in activities associated with Secret Path Week which runs October 17 and 22nd. After hearing the story of Chanie Wenjack, a 12-year-old boy who died while escaping a residential school, the late Gord Downie wrote a series of poems to bring awareness to residential schools and how we can all take part in reconciliACTION. Last week the grade six classes headed out into the community to participate in Walk for Wenjack.
Staff Professional Development Day
OHS staff participated in a day focused on relationship and connectedness. The day started with a presentation by Mount Royal University Capstone students who walked staff through Ani to Pisi. Created by Elder Roy Bear Chief (Siksika Nation — Blackfoot Confederacy), and shared with permission, the premise likens truly internalizing and understanding reconciliation to weaving an Ani to Pisi, or spider web, to create a path to helping each other and connecting. One premise in the Indigenous-based learning was the concept of the human spider web. As people, we are all connected, and that connectedness lends itself to coming together to both understand and help one another.
