Our Learning Commons is a place for students and staff to work together and engage with information to create new understanding through quality literature, print and digital resources.
Hours of Operation
Regular school hours Monday – Friday
Grade1-3 students have scheduled weekly book exchanges; Kindergarten students begin weekly library sessions in January. Grade 4–6 classes have scheduled bi-weekly exchanges. There are also some open times for exchanging.
Borrowing Privileges
The loan period for library books is two weeks with opportunities for renewals as needed. All Grade 1–6 students attend library orientations in September, which include reminders about responsibility and keeping library books “safe.” We appreciate your support in reinforcing the message that your child is responsible for school library books while they have them at home by helping to locate a safe place to store books away from water, pets, and small children. If a book gets damage, we encourage students to report this to our library assistant.
Overdue & Damage Policy
Students are responsible for returning all resources on time. If resources are late the following step are taken:
- Our library assistant will ask a student to locate and return the book(s). If the student is unable to do that, the family may receive an email reminder from the teacher or the library assistant requesting the return of overdue book(s).
- if the item is lost or damaged a letter to the parent(s)/guardian(s) requesting payment for the lost item may be sent home. OHS does not charge for lost or damaged books unless a student has a pattern of repeating this behaviour. Any charges will appear on the student’s fee report in MyCBE.

Today’s learners cannot imagine life without the internet and supporting technology. The concept of the traditional library is changing to include technology, online tools and spaces for collaboration and exploration.
