Olympic Heights Update - Nov. 3

Fall Break

In support of student and staff well-being, the CBE instructional calendar includes a short fall break for all schools, with more consecutive days off than previously provided in the traditional calendar. The number of instructional hours in the school year remains unchanged. Two non-instructional days combined with a day in lieu for Remembrance Day allow for this break. This decision responds to what was heard through an engagement process related to transitioning to one calendar this fall. For 2023-24, this break will happen Nov. 9 – 14. The rationale for this system decision was to align previously modified school calendars to a single system calendar. This decision was explained in a message to parents sent on Dec. 15, 2022. Additional information can also be found on the CBE website here. We hope everyone enjoys a restful and reflective fall break.

Active Travel Survey – We Need Your Voice!

We have had limited response – less than 4% of our families – to this survey so we are resending the link in hopes of increased engagement. Please take 5 minutes to complete this travel survey with your oldest child: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/8VVND6K.  We are using the data from the results for a variety of school initiatives, including students’ Active Travel club. Thank you in advance!

Calgary Fire Department Visits Grade 1

On Wednesday, November 1st, the Grade 1 students had a special presentation from Todd Berry, a Community Services Officer from the Calgary Fire Department. He discussed fire safety with the students, including topics such as smoke alarms, emergency evacuation plans, and how to stay safe around fire. Remember to test your smoke alarms regularly! We played a game of “Hot or Not,” which was aimed at identifying potential fire and heat hazards in our homes. He then answered many of our “burning” questions. Thank you, Firefighter Todd! Check out the picture on the sidebar!

News from the Learning Commons

Over the upcoming break, we hope our students will enjoy reading the many great books they have checked out from our library.  The break also provides an opportunity to try to locate overdue books that might be at home so they can be returned for other students to enjoy when classes resume. Our library assistant will be letting teachers know early next week which children have overdue books and they’ll pass that info onto our students. Please support our students in developing responsible behaviours including returning library books when due.

Halloween Follow-Up

Tuesday was a fun-filled day with students taking the opportunity to dress up in a variety of costumes and outfits for Halloween. Kindergarten students paraded around the building, while older students shared their styles, spooky or otherwise, with classroom and grade-level peers. Not to be outdone, many staff members donned unique or humorous costumes to get in on the Halloween fun. Thanks to everyone who made this year’s Halloween festivities, including the great dance last Thursday, such a success. The Olympic Heights School community is amazing!
