Olympic Heights Update - November 17

Learning Conferences

Our second round of learning conferences will be on Thursday, November 23, from 4:00 - 8:00 PM, and Friday, November 24, from 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM. The booking system will be opening today, November 17, at 4:00 PM, and will close next Thursday at 4:00 PM. Time slots will be 15 minutes per student, however, families with students supported by an Individual Program Plan (IPP) are encouraged to connect with their child’s teacher to arrange a 30-minute time slot. If you feel a language interpreter would support your conversation with your child’s teacher, please reach out to them to have this arranged. Conferences can be booked through your MyCBE account. See you next week!

Fire Drill for Emergency Preparedness

We held our second fire drill of the year today and our students did great! The building was evacuated (in one minute and six seconds) in an efficient and orderly manner. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and these drills are essential for our emergency preparedness. While our first drill was announced to all staff and students, today’s drill was not announced to students beforehand in order to mimic a real emergency evacuation event.

November 30 Team Pride Day

On Thursday, November 30, OHS will be having a Team Pride spirit day, based on discussions with students during yesterday’s Student Voice meeting. Students and staff are invited to wear an article of clothing that supports a sports team, club or interest group, our school, etc. Students could wear a sports jersey, OHS clothing, club/team sweater (gymnastics, Scouts, Girl Guides, etc.), or anything that they want to “rep” that day.

The Buffalo Teaches Us Respect

As part of our character education program, each month students explore one of the Seven Sacred Teachings. In December, students will develop their understanding of “respect” and how the Buffalo embodies this quality.

The Buffalo, through giving its life and sharing every part of its being, showed the deep respect it had for the people. No animal was more important to the existence of Indigenous families than this animal, and its gift provided shelter, clothing and utensils for daily living. Native people believed themselves to be true caretakers of the great herds, and developed a sustainable relationship with the Buffalo resulting in a relationship that was a true expression of respect.

Understanding and practicing respect as symbolized by the Buffalo involves acknowledging the interconnectedness of all life, valuing diversity, honoring traditions, and fostering a deep reverence for the natural world and its resources. During storms, Buffalo tend to turn and face the bad weather, rather than running away, reflecting the Buffalo’s strength, resiliency, and adaptability in the face of adversity.

Bullying Awareness Week (Nov. 20-24)

Bullying Awareness Week is observed annually in Alberta during the third week of November. It is a time to promote awareness and understanding of bullying and its impacts. Bullying is a relationship problem that involves a power imbalance, which is why it can be so challenging to overcome it by ourselves. Regardless of where bullying happens – in school, the office, at home or in the community – there are people and resources that can help.

This year’s theme, #WhereToTurn, encourages everyone to recognize that help is available, no matter who or where you are in the province. By using the hashtags #WhereToTurn and #BullyingAwarenessWeek, you can help raise awareness that there is always somewhere to turn for support. Together, we can all strive to model healthy relationships and stand up to bullying in our homes, schools, workplaces and communities.

Lost and Found

Our lost and found is getting very full of lost items.  Please remind your child to check for their lost and found items.  The lost and found will also be on display during next week’s learning conferences. If you wish to come to the school to see if any of your child(ren)'s items are in the lost and found, please check in at the Main Office and go take a look.  It is very helpful when clothing is labeled.
