Take Me Outside Day: A Celebration of Outdoor Learning
Championed by our Active School Club, Take Me Outside Day helps to raise awareness about outdoor learning by encouraging educators to take their learners outside. On October 18, OHS teachers and students have the opportunity to head outside with their class and learn beyond the four walls of the classroom. With inspiration from Andy Goldsworthy, students can make their own version of nature art with found and foraged materials, then submit their class’s art to collectively create a national art mosaic! Please see https://takemeoutside.ca/tmoday/ for details!
Grade 4 Visits OH Ranch
During the height of Calgary's beautiful fall season, our grade 4 classes were able to attend the OH Ranch Education program near Longview, Alberta. Each class had the opportunity to explore Alberta's rich history and deepen our connection to the land. Activities included Indigenous teachings related to native plants, exploring the foothills ecosystem, and visiting an early Rancher's cabin and NWMP outpost. Students enjoyed a scenic walk to an impressive viewpoint, and participated in ranching activities such as ropemaking, lassoing "cattle", toy horse racing and the students' favourite, petting Missy Darlin' (a therapy horse). It was a fantastic day that allowed our grade 4 students the chance to truly appreciate this land that we call home.
OurSCHOOL Student Survey – Grades 4, 5, & 6
Students in grades 4-6 will be participating in an anonymous online school perception survey for students called the OurSCHOOL Student Survey. Responses from this survey are used at the system and school level to recognize and improve what is necessary for students to feel safe, welcome, and cared for when at school. The survey allows students to share their feedback on their experiences at school, the school environment, and school improvement programs. Other survey measures include topics such as behaviours and attitudes linked to student success, emotional and social well-being and physical health. Please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher, if you have questions.
Secret Path Week
OHS continues to be a member Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund Legacy School Program The Legacy Schools program is a national initiative to engage, empower and connect students and educators to further reconciliation through awareness, education and action. Secret Path Week commemorates the legacies of Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack, who joined the spirit world on October 17 and 22, respectively. In 1966, twelve-year-old Chanie Wenjack ran away from Cecilia Jeffrey Residential School in Kenora, Ontario. He walked for 36 hours along the train tracks before dying of exposure on October 22. His death sparked the first inquest into the treatment of Indigenous children in the residential school system. Chanie is gone, but his legacy endures. SCA Community Association – Our Friendly Neighbours
As a school, we always want to be mindful of those who border or school grounds. We are VERY fortunate to have excellent neighbours at the SCA Community Association. The SCA CA shares many of its resources with the school, allowing access to the community garden, as well as the rinks and courts when requested. To help reciprocate this “good neighbour” approach we would like to remind parents not to use the SCA CA parking lot for drop off and pick up during peak times. While the community parking lot is convenient, the community association has three separate childcare\preschool programs and seniors programming that take place throughout the day that need guaranteed safe access to the parking lot. Sadly, on occasion, when the SCA staff tries to direct OHS parents not to park in their parking lot during peak times they are often treated rudely and aggressively. As the weather changes and winter nears, we want to kindly remind parents to refrain from using the community association lot during peak times. Please, help us be a good neighbour!
School Safety Reminder: Jaywalking at School
We just wanted to send a friendly reminder about ensuring the safety of our little ones when you're dropping them off or picking them up from school. Please, let's all use the designated crosswalks and follow our patrollers, not just to keep our kids safe but also to set a great example for them. It's all about creating a safe and happy environment for our students, and we appreciate your help in making that happen. For more helpful tips, please check out Parent Traffic Safety Tips from the City of Calgary and Const. Randy MacDonald, Traffic Safety, CPS.
School Council & OHS Parents Association Meeting
Please mark your calendars for next Thursday’s School Council & OHSPA meeting, beginning at 6:30 PM. We look forward to seeing families and community members, hearing voices and ideas, and planning ways to make our school even better! We also look forward to welcoming special guests, the Grade 1 teaching team, to share a glimpse into their learning with students. See you there!
Lost and Found
On occasion we will be including a photo or two of our “Lost and Found.” If you see an item that looks familiar, please ask your child to visit the hallway near the fish tanks in the Plaza or email us at olympicheights@cbe.ab.ca. (Photos are on the right-hand side of this webpage.)
