Olympic Heights Update - October 27
Halloween Dance
WOW! That was one amazing Halloween Dance last night at OHS! The turnout was huge, the costumes were incredible, and the children were thrilled. We can’t say thank you enough to Shannon Gillet and the wonderful parent volunteers who put this together – but thank you one more time for your dedication and commitment to supporting the school community. Hearty appreciation to our School Council & OHS Parents Association for providing support for the event! Take a look at some of the great photos on the side of the webpage!
Halloween Costumes at School (Oct. 31)
On Tuesday, October 31st, we're excited to invite all students to participate in Halloween festivities by wearing costumes to school. To ensure a safe and inclusive environment, we kindly request that costumes be comfortable for full participation and free from weapons, masks, face coverings, or violent or gory themes. Remember, your child will be in class all day, so inflatable costumes might be very challenging. Dressing up in a costume is not required if students prefer not to participate. In the spirit of promoting a healthy and equitable celebration, please refrain from sending candy, food, or similar items to school, as we won't be able to distribute or share them with the students. Thank you for your cooperation, and let's make this Halloween a memorable and enjoyable experience for all our students.
SWAT Halloween Games
As a team one of our wellness goals is to bring more fun as we build connections with one another in our school community! Halloween is coming up and staff and students are ready to get into the spooky mood! School Wellness Action Team members have created some games for our students to try in the gym and outside! Zombie Ball, Bone Crusher, Ghoul-Ghoul Ball, Spider’s Hit, and Eyeball Bowling are some of the great games they have planned in the gym! They even have a Ghostbuster’s Survival Game set up outdoors in the forest. Halloween games will wrap on the 31st with costumes and game play! SWAT wishes everyone a Spooktacular Halloween week!
Real-World Learning: Pumpkin Math in Grade 3
On Monday and Tuesday for Halloween, the third-grade students will be engaged in a pumpkin math activity. Initially, they will work in groups to estimate the height, circumference, weight (using paperclips or building blocks), and the number of seeds in their pumpkins. Following this, they will collaborate in groups to determine the actual measurements, and the pumpkins will be cut open to facilitate the counting of seeds using skip counting. By estimating and measuring the pumpkins' attributes, as well as counting the seeds, the students are not only practicing important math skills but also applying them to a fun and relevant context. This hands-on approach allows them to see the direct connection between what they learn in the classroom and how it can be applied in real life, making the learning experience more meaningful and memorable. It also encourages critical thinking as they navigate the challenge of estimating and measuring, enhancing their problem-solving abilities.
City Councillor Visit Olympic Heights
On Thursday, October 26th the grade six classes welcomed Ward 6 Councillor Richard Pootmans. It was an exciting experience to have a local government representative engage with students in an opportunity to ask questions, sparking their curiosity about the roles and responsibilities of a city councillor. His visit provided students with a better understanding of the municipal electoral process as well as highlighting some of the topics that City Council is currently debating. Grade six students formulated and asked thoughtful questions, which led to discussion about public safety, affordable housing, arena deals, and proposed interchanges. We are grateful for the time Councillor Pootmans took to engage with students in this meaningful experience.
Global News Weather Anchor Visits Olympic Heights
Our Grade 5 students recently had an informative visit from Gaby Rios, weather anchor at Global News. During her visit, Ms. Rios discussed weather reporting and its connection to our Grade 5 weather curriculum. This real-world interaction enriched our students' knowledge and inspired them to explore meteorology, fostering a deeper appreciation for their studies. Portions of the visit with students were filmed and aired on Global News on Thursday evening!
Follow-Up Family Travel Survey – We Need Your Voice!
Our school continues to take part in an Active and Safe Routes to School project to improve the school journey for our students. Through School Travel Planning, our school has been working with community partners to reduce congestion, address traffic safety issues and encourage more students to walk and wheel for the school journey. Please complete this 5-minute Family Survey with your eldest child who attends this school. Your ongoing input is important to the success and sustainability of this project. Knowing what travel choices families are making and why they are making them helps the school to create an action plan that considers everyone’s needs. We will compare this data with that gathered at the beginning of the project last fall.
