Learning Conferences Gratitude

Thanks to all our families who came out for our first round of learning conferences these past two days – it was a pleasure to see so many smiling faces, online and in-person. Thanks as well to our teachers for staying late on Thursday night to learn about their students. A final thank you and merci to our amazing School Council for providing dinner and beverages, so that teachers could remain nourished and energized! Our next round of learning conferences will be occurring on November 23 and 24, 2023.

 

Terry Fox Run a HUGE success

Gratitude to our amazing school community – from the youngest Kindergartener to the oldest grandparent – for supporting our Terry Fox Run. We eclipsed our fundraising goals and currently have raised over $5700 for the Terry Fox Foundation and cancer research. Special thanks to Natalie Kwadrans, Team Canada snowboarder and cancer survivor, for her presentation. It was so neat to see the exact replica of Terry’s artificial leg! As if that wasn’t enough, CTV News and Global News both came out to cover the event. You might have seen Mr. Barkley or one of our grade 6 students being interviewed! Thanks again OHS – you rock!

 

Resource | Home Literacy Support for Families

Want to help your child in the area of reading? An information sheet has been created to share with families of children in kindergarten through grade three to support the shift from “Home Reading” to “Home Literacy”. Home Literacy has a more comprehensive and expansive view of literacy acquisition, and in doing so, provides more entry points for families to engage with their early readers. This will continue to build a positive home literacy environment and is more inclusive of the strengths families bring to supporting their children. The information sheet can be found .

 

Apple Fundraiser

Back by popular demand, the Olympic Heights Parents Association is pleased to announce that we will be running the Apple Fundraiser again this year! We have partnered up with Sun-Oka Fruit Farms, an award-winning Okanagan orchard to sell their delicious farm-fresh apples. This century-old family farm has won all kinds of major awards for their fruit including the prize for growing the best apples in Canada for eight straight years. Order deadline is October 8th. School Apparel

The Olympic Heights School Council and Parent Association have partnered with a new design company - Fresh Brand Co. - to bring in a new selection of OHS school apparel! The apparel pop-up shop is open for the 2023-2024 school year if you have an interest in ordering school apparel. There will be 3 sales this year - a Back To School, Winter Holiday, and Spring Sale - so there are a few opportunities to buy goods when they are discounted. However, apparel can be ordered any time. Library Volunteers Needed!

We are seeking some parent volunteers to help shelve library books. If you can spare some time and have an active police clearance, please email Chelsey Crozier (chcrozier@cbe.ab.ca) by September 29.  You’ll be invited to attend a training session with our library assistant Mrs. Sjogren on Friday, October 13 in the morning. Following that, shelving shifts will be scheduled between 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. on days that are convenient to you.
