Welcome & Updates from School Council and Parents Association
Warm welcome and updates from
School Council and Parents Association
Happy back to school, everyone, and warmest welcome to all new families! We’re thrilled to introduce a variety of activities over the coming weeks in support of our school community -- including its incredible teachers, staff and students.
About School Council
Everyone is Welcome
Recognizing the valuable role parents play in education, School Council is a collective of parents, community members, school leadership and teachers who collaborate to play an advisory role supporting school planning and improvement.
All parents are welcome. There are many opportunities to get involved and there is no commitment needed to participate. If you’re curious, simply want to listen and learn more about what’s happening in the school, or would like to get more involved, please reach out to chair@ohsparent.com or join us at our first meeting, Thursday, September 14th at 6:30 in the Learning Commons (the atrium just past OHS front office) Your voice, input and perspective is tremendously valued and appreciated! More information can be found on the School Council page of the OHS website. You can also join our Facebook Group to connect and get updates.
Council Member Vacancies
There are currently two Council Member vacancies for parents interested in getting a bit more involved. We are seeking a Communications Coordinator, who will work with the Chair and committee volunteers to plan and develop communications, and a Volunteer Coordinator, who will support the coordination of volunteers as needed for occasional special events and projects. Please reach out to chair@ohsparent.com if you’re curious and one of these roles may be a fit for you!
Volunteer on a committee or for a program
We have several committees that provide important supports for the school, including volunteer-run programs like Special Events, Parent Engagement, Kiss & Drop and Fun Lunch. Opportunities can be flexible and designed to suit your schedule. If you’re interested in volunteering, we’d love to hear from you at volunteers@ohsparent.com. Learn more about general volunteer requirements on the Volunteering page of the OHS website. There are several one time opportunities throughout the year in your child’s classroom. Please reach out with interest to their homeroom teacher to extend your volunteerism willingness! Note that an updated Calgary Board of Education Police Clearance is required.
Parents Association and Fundraising
The Parents Association is the fundraising body for the school and is made up of school council members. It plays a critical role supporting the school. Over the 2023-2024 school year there will be several opportunities to participate. Stay tuned for back-to-school apple sales this fall and a call for casino volunteers in the spring.
Historically, these efforts have raised significant funds for the school. Contributions go toward classroom inquiry funds, technology, school and playground equipment, field trips, teacher appreciation, special events, and so much more!
Further information can be found within the Parent Society and Fundraising sections of the OHS website.
Thank you!
We’re extremely grateful for all of the amazing teachers, staff, parents and families who contribute to our school community and make Olympic Heights a special and caring place of learning and growth for all of our children. We’re excited to work in service of OHS this year and we look forward to meeting you.
All the best for what we hope to be a wonderful year of learning, citizenship and individual achievement for everyone.
Warm regards,
OHS School Council and Parents Association
